In a previous post we looked at the four track, promo-only Canadian ‘4 Cuts Deep’ cassette EP that was issued to help push Peter Murphy’s wonderful ‘Deep’ album from late 1989. This time out, while looking a little similar in passing, is the commercially release USA cassingle format for the ‘Cuts You Up’ single itself.
It would prove to be a Peter Murphy classic, well deserved at that. Also issued in the US on 12″ single and a promo-only CD single as well.
Tracklist:
- Cuts You Up (5’24”)
- Roll Call (Reprise) (8’20”)
- A Strange Kind Of Love (Version II) (5’19”)
The same selection of tracks is also repeated on side two. So, it is the full-length LP version of ‘Cuts You Up’ that is contained, as opposed to either of the shorter edits that also do the rounds (the US and UK edits differ). A small detail re my copy is that the sleeve for the cassingle only lists the first two tracks – the only reference it has to the inclusion of ‘A Strange Kind Of Love (Version II)’ is on a hype sticker attached to the shrinkwrap. There are later copies out there though that do include the corrected, full tracklisting printed on the card sleeve.
Those two additional tracks are of course equally great. ‘Roll Call (Reprise)’ took the already funky main version and deconstructed it into a curiously minimalistic behemoth of a track. We’ve looked previously at the remixed version of ‘A Strange Kind Of Love’ that was issued as a promo, but here is the more conventional ‘Version II’ mix that you might have imagined being more likely to be get the nod for inclusion on the LP in place of the more minimal and melancholic album take.
The other commercially available format (12″) included all these tracks and also found space to add in the 4’13” US Edit of ‘Cuts You Up’ too. The promo CD single includes only the LP mix and US Edit of ‘Cuts You Up’.
